Europe’s New Entry Requirements

Many of you have asked about the pending changes for US passport holders for entering Europe.  These are good questions – in large part because as usual, the TV “News” is offering half-truths, partial information, and no context for what is actually happening.

The new entry system is called ETIAS.  Here’s what you need to know:

It’s Not really a Visa.  Some countries require you to send your passport to their embassy in advance of travel, and often you need to hire a lawyer to get it done.  The Europeans are putting in place an Electronic Travel Authorization… not a visa requirement.

It’s no big deal.  Visitors to Australia and New Zealand have been doing this for a couple of decades, and generally find the process to be painless.  We expect the same from the EU.  At this point MOST countries require some form of advance authorizations – this is not new.

What countries does it cover?  ETIAS will cover all 27 countries in the Schengen Zone.  This covers just about all the countries our clients visit in Europe.  The exceptions are mostly in Eastern Europe (Albania, Armenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Turkey)

What about the UK?  The British chose to leave the European Union, so ETIAS will not cover your trips to the England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.  They will be putting in their own Electronic Travel Authorization soon, so at some point in the future if you have a trip to Europe planned that also includes some time in the UK, you’ll have to get authorization for each separately.  There are lots of opinions around BREXIT – but there little question that this aspect of it makes very little sense.

What are the requirements?  You need a valid US-Passport, and a credit card to pay the fee.  You will also be asked questions about your previous travel history, and your occupation.  If you have any criminal convictions, you will be required to disclose those.  I have completed many visas and electronic travel authorizations, and these questions are quite standard.

What’s the process?  Sometime in advance of 96 hours before you go, you’ll need to go to the ETIAS website, and complete your application, and pay the fee (if applicable).  Once you’ve gotten ETIAS authorization it is good for 3-years for multiple entries for up to 90-days.  The system is expected to issue approvals within a few minutes (or up to 24-hours).  They are currently not taking applications, but once this begins, it makes sense to apply well in advance.

What’s the cost?  €7 if you’re between the ages of 18 and 70.  If you are older or younger, it will be free.

When does this begin?  There have been several false-starts, but the current time-table is for this to start in 2024.  The have been some media reports that this will start in November of 2023, but there is no mention of this on the official website.  What it does say is that they intend to be forgiving about the whole process for the first few months while they work out the bugs, so for anyone traveling in the next several months, there really is nothing to worry about.

Don’t be cranky about this.  It’s worth noting that citizens of the EU have been required to get an electronic authorization to visit the USA for more than a decade, and they have to apply every time they come to the US at a cost of $14.  The conditions the Europeans are imposing on us are notably less than we’ve imposed on them.

Venice – Destination Focus

Perhaps the first time you imagined Venice was after seeing it represented in a cartoon as a child… or maybe in a James Bond film.  There is no doubt that Venice is a unique place that captures the imagination.

Given its position in the Mediterranean, it’s also in a prime location for servicing cruise ships, which it did very well until 2021.  After sabre-rattling for years about cruise ship traffic in the Venetian Lagoon, the Italian Government acted with uncharacteristic swiftness in outlawing any cruise ship over 25,000 tons (which is essentially all of them).  This left cruise lines scrambling to find alternative docking locations that could still provide reasonable access to the many attractions in Venice.

If you are booked (or are considering) a Mediterranean Cruise, it’s worth asking where you’ll be docked if you’ve not been to Venice previously.  Here’s the most common docking locations currently in use for Venice:

  • Porto Marghera – this is the closest port, and it is on the mainland side, close to the airport.  It’s about 20 minutes into town.
  • Fusina – this is near Porto Marghera.  It’s about 30 minutes by car or water taxi into the city center.
  • Chioggia – this charming little town is sometimes called “Little Venice” and is on the opposite side of the Venetian Lagoon from Venice.  By car or bus it’s about an hour from Venice.  You can also take local (boat) transit, and transfer at Lido to get into Venice.
  • Trieste – this is about 120 kilometers or 90 minutes from Venice.  You will want to look at a cruise line transfer to get here to/from Venice.
  • Ravenna – is actually the port for Bologna.  If your ship is docked here, it’s about 150 kilometers or between 1.5 and 2 hours into Venice.

The bottom line regardless of where your ship is docked is that you’ll be some distance from the Venice city-center – at least compared to prior to 2021 when you could walk right off your ship, and into the sites of Venice.

The cruise lines are still operating shore excursions in Venice – there’s just a bit longer of a motor coach ride to get there from the ship.

Even without this complication, Venice is a place that warrants more than a few hours to explore, and most people using Venice as an embarkation or disembarkation port spend a few days pre or post.  If you want to stay on or near the Grand Canal, you won’t find many cheap hotel options – for those you should look near the airport (about 30 minutes out of town).

If you’re thinking of staying 3 or 4 days pre or post in Venice to really see the region in depth, you may want to look at Uniworld’s river boat La Venezia that resides in the lagoon.  It’s well under 25,000 tons, so it is not forbidden from the City of Canals.  You’ll be staying waterfront everyday in a different location, but you only have to unpack once.  They run one-week itineraries that start every week on Sundays.  You’ll also find that a week aboard La Venezia (that includes all your drinks, meals, gratuities, transfers, and daily shore activities) will be more cost effective than staying in a hotel in the city.

Uniworld is the Boutique Hotels operator on the rivers, and there’s no doubt when you’re on board La Venezia, that you’re in Venice.  Here’s our ship tour video from when we were on board in 2022:  https://youtu.be/hUDyly0PG4w?si=1YLOPZt2CtGPfiTb

Travel Irritations and Traveller Resilience

First order of business:  We are VERY sorry.

Many of you received our email multiple times last week, and I’m fully aware of how annoying this was, and I want to personally say “I’m sorry”.

There are about 30,000 of you who receive these notes every week, so we use an email service to deliver them, and they experienced a technical problem that resulted in multiple deliveries.  They have assured us that they’ve determined the root of the problem, and that it won’t happen again.

So thank you for your patience, and thank you to the overwhelming number of you who reached out to us to let us know we had a problem.  Our entire team worked through the weekend to try to personally respond to the several hundred messages we received, so I hope you heard back from us.

The overwhelming majority of the emails we received were of this nature:

“Oh-oh.  Just a heads-up, I received this message 10 times in a one minute period.  Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the problem”

Yes – we quickly became aware, but still really appreciate so many of you taking the time to tell us so.

We also received some hate-mail.  For your entertainment, here are some of them:

Is this really necessary?  One message is enough…nine messages (all identical) is “overkill marketing and solicitations”.  ONE TIME ONLY.

Good grief. You filled my inbox with emails. One a day is plenty.

Yesterday I received at least 3 identical messages . Today it was 5. Somebody has to pay attention .

Really?????  9 emails in 10 minutes?

And these were the polite ones… I’m not going to publish those filled with excessive anger and vitriol.

If I received 10 identical messages, I know I’d be annoyed, but I’d quickly realize an error had been made and exercise my index finger on the delete button.

Many of these people have received a solitary once-a-week email from us for literally years, but this mistake still managed to set them off like fireworks on the 4th of July.

So we removed all those people from our mailing list.

Not because we don’t sympathize with their irritation – it’s very frustrating.

We unsubscribed them because travel requires being able to roll with the punches.  Things happen – flights get delayed; hotels overbook; ground transportation can be late; there are traffic jams; attractions close at the last minute; cruise lines cancel ports.  The list of potential issues when you travel is endless.

The best travellers are those who have enough resilience to quickly recover when things don’t go their way.

Those who get set off by an email error are not resilient, and are probably happier sitting in their basements looking for other reasons to be angry than out there learning more about the world.  Either way, we really don’t want to deal with them.

So, as much as we regret the inconvenience and annoyance of last week’s email mishap, we were very much encouraged by the number of high-quality people on our subscriber list.  Out of 30,000 people, we only unsubscribed a few dozen angry souls.  In percentage terms, this is significantly less than 1%.

So thank you for sticking with us, and for being tolerant of this error.  It won’t happen again.

Explora Journeys World Debut

New travel products don’t come along very often – particularly in the cruise sector.  Virgin Voyages has attempted it – but that product is not quite right for our clients (although if you’re a 30-something looking to get a tattoo on vacation, it’s perfect!).

Explora Journeys is a luxury lifestyle brand created from scratch, and their Maiden Voyage set sail from Copenhagen earlier this month.  We have several travel industry peers aboard, and the reports of the ship, crew, food and service are glowing.

There is just one ship operating currently, but there are 5 more near-identical ships on order that will hit the water between now and 2028.  Explora I will hold 922 guests when fully loaded, and the ship is 64,000 tons.  If you’re wondering how this compares with other small ship luxury ocean lines, here are the stats.  A higher passenger space ratio indicates more space per person, overall. This space can be part of passenger suites but also includes public spaces.

GuestsSize (tons)Passenger Space Ratio
Explora Journeys92264,00069.4
Oceania120067,00055.8
Seabourn60040,00066.0
Viking Ocean93048,00051.6

Here’s a bit more detail about this exciting new brand:

  • Spacious Suites – The entry-level stateroom on Explora ships is a 377 square foot suite with a king-sized bed, walk-in closet, and a veranda (or “Sun Terrace” as they call them) large enough for 2 chairs AND a daybed for soaking up the sun.
  • Inclusions – The fare includes an open bar (including an in-suite mini-bar), all specialty dining, gratuities, taxes/fees, and high speed internet… it really includes everything other than shore excursions (Explora calls these “Destination Experiences”).  This is because in preliminary surveys, potential guests indicated they would rather make their own decisions about allocating dollars to shore excursions.  To be clear – the cruise lines that include shore excursions are not offering them free – they are simply pre-paid.  With Explora (as with Seabourn) you have complete control over the choice.
  • Dining – there isn’t a main dining room on Explora, where everyone shows up at an appointed time.  Instead, much like a land resort, there are a variety of choices (9 of them!) where you can either make a reservation ahead of time OR come as a “walk up”.  One of the restaurants will be themed for the specific area through which you are travelling (e.g., when you’re in Greece, it will be a Greek restaurant).  Frank Garanger, the Head of Culinary, was formerly with Oceania (well known for their amazing food), so we are expecting great things with Explora’s culinary program.
  • Entertainment – much like the restaurant situation, Explora does not have a big main theatre that cranks out the Vegas-style production shows.  Instead, there are a wide variety of smaller venues (10 of them!) with different styles and types of entertainment, that are intended for you to drop in at your whim.  No more setting your watch to rush through dinner to make the show.
  • Size – With 922 guests, Explora ships are small enough to offer a luxury experience, and large enough to be able to offer the multiple food and entertainment venues mentioned above.
  • Price – Currently the entry level price point (remember, no matter which room you choose, you’ll have a huge veranda suite with a king bed) is between $350 and $600 per person, per day.  With all the inclusions, this translates to really good value – particularly when you compare it to a European urban city stay (which it resembles more so than a cruise, in many ways).  Explora has already revealed that their prices will increase (not decrease) as the departure date approaches. Right now, with Explora trying to attract new guests, the pricing is at a real sweet spot.
  • Itineraries – Most Explora itineraries start and finish in major ports, making flight arrangements very easy.  In between, you’ll visit many lesser-known places, which makes this perfect for people who have travelled extensively.  You’ll get to the out-of-the-way places, but you don’t have to take a private plane or multiple connections to access them.
  • Itineraries (Part 2) – Explora I does not have a home port but rather roams the world continuously.  There are many 6-to-10-day itineraries you can combine with the segment immediately before or after, meaning you can string together cruises and be on board as long as you like WITHOUT repeating any ports.  When staying at a hotel, you can pick your check-in and check-out dates… Explora Journeys has come as close as you can to replicating that on a moving vessel.  Also consider the possibility of creating a Custom World Cruise.   You choose the segments you want to be on board, and in between segments you can stay for a while in a destination that intrigues yyou… then fly to catch up with the ship for your next onboard segment.
  • Casual European Luxury – often, luxury cruise lines have things like caviar luncheons and butlers with white gloves.  Some people love that stuff.  Others in that situation (like me) feel like Gilligan on a ship full of Mr. & Mrs. Howells.  Explora has struck the perfect balance between luxury, food, beverage, amenities and service that you can enjoy in a golf shirt (not a tuxedo).

Bob and I are amongst a small number of travel agents invited to be on the Advisory Board for this exciting new brand.  As such, we can get you an exclusive 300 Euro “Journey Experience Credit” (onboard credit) to spend on ANY Explora cruise that’s 7 nights or longer.

We have an explainer video about Explora Journeys on our YouTube channel.  Bob interviews Aimee Price – the Head of Sales for USA West and Canada.  Besides participating in an in-depth discussion of what to expect from Explora Journeys, Aimee also provided a bunch of photos and videos about the ships and their amenities.  Here’s the link:  https://youtu.be/qxtqmE94EBg

The Future of the Travel Biz

It’s been a wild ride these past three years – both for travellers, and those of us that work in the industry.

Today is the first day of Virtuoso Travel Week – often equated to Paris Fashion Week for the Leisure Travel Industry.  We’ll be meeting with vendors to renew and reinforce the important relationships we have in the industry, AND to learn about new products.  The week is both busy and intense, but well worth it – it would have to be worthwhile to get me anywhere near Las Vegas in the summer!

I thought I would share a little bit about how our business has evolved in the past three years, where I see it going, and the impact macro-forces in the industry are having on both you and us.

  • Supply and Demand are Not Balanced – This is the root cause of many of the problems travellers currently face.  Statistically, demand for cruises, packaged land vacations, and hotel stays is somewhere between 200% and 300% of what they were in 2019 (the last “normal” year).  In terms of supply, the biggest shortage is of qualified people to operate these travel products.
  • It’s Very Busy – After going 15 months without getting paid, this is a good problem to have, but it is a problem, regardless.  We are doing our very best to scale up quickly to manage all of your additional requests, but our response time may not be as good as we want it to be.  So thank you all for your patience – we’re working as hard as we can, and we are taking action to improve.
  • Vendors are Busy – Many of you have commented about wait times of several hours for cruise vendors or tour companies.  They have the same problem we are having – we’re just better equipped to handle it because we are smaller and more agile.  This has gotten better, but many of those companies are still not fully staffed.  It is frustrating (both for you and us), but these companies are well aware they have a problem.  Fixing it is a much bigger challenge.
  • Air Travel is Not Fully Restored – This is partly a result of the forces above, and partly a regulatory failure, as legislators have betrayed the travelling public for the past 45 years.  I am hoping for improvement, but not seeing any credible signs from either the airlines or from Washington that this will occur.
  • Inflation is Real – Contrary to some media reports, this is a global problem that is much worse in other jurisdictions than it is here at home.  The bottom line is that you should expect to pay more for travel in the next few years.  We’ve already seen this with hotel pricing.  So far, cruise pricing is not seeing double-digit increases, but I make no promises for what is to come.
  • Off Season Travel – It used to be that if you went somewhere in the “quiet-season”, you would face far fewer crowds, and get a break on price.  This is now significantly muted.  It’s still possible, but the peak season has gotten longer.  Bob and I were in Rome in early May – and it was every bit as busy as we’ve seen at the peak of the summer in other years.
  • Crowds and Crowd Mitigation – We have seen more and more destinations around the world put measures in place to limit the number of visitors.  Venice has eliminated cruise ships entirely (if you’re sailing to or from Venice, you’ll actually be docked outside of the city).  West Palm Beach Florida has restricted the number of cruise ships that can visit.  Most recently, Amsterdam has put a limit on the number of ocean ships that can dock at that city (river boats are unaffected).  I would look for this trend to continue.
  • Longer Trip Duration – We are slowly catching up to our European cousins with the amount of time taken off at once.  The number of trips longer than 2 weeks that we’ve booked in the past year has increased substantially.
  • Close-In and Longer Out – People are booking last minute (travel in the next 3 months), and/or further out (travel 12 months or longer from now).  This is partly by necessity for some trips:  Egypt and Portugal (for example) are mostly sold out for 2024, so people are looking into 2025.  Travellers are also booking close-in trips to take advantage of pricing that will perhaps not be quite as subject to inflationary pressures.

Tauck – Canada’s Capital Cities

You’ve been asking for more domestic offers, and for such purposes, I’ll include Canada.  Normally vacation packages focus on Canada’s natural splendor in the Rocky Mountains or Maritime Provinces.  This urban itinerary from Tauck caught my eye because it’s a little different:

  • 10-days between Toronto and Quebec City:
  • Toronto:  Canada’s largest city, and one of the world’s most diverse and multicultural cities in the world.  Visit the Hockey Hall of Fame, or the CN Tower (the tallest structure in the Western Hemisphere and previously the tallest in the world).
  • Niagara Falls:  It’s touristy, but you still have to visit
  • Ottawa:  Visit the Canadian Parliament, or perhaps one of the many museums.
  • Montreal:  Go for dinner in Old Montreal, and feel like you’ve been transported to Europe.
  • Quebec City:  wander North America’s only walled city, and bask in its French language and culture.
  • Stay at the beautiful Fairmont Hotels throughout your trip, including the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec – reportedly the world’s most photographed hotel.
  • Departures from $5590 per person (double occupancy) in September 2023, or May – September 2024.
