Greenland:  Add it to your Bucket List

GREENLAND — It’s so close, yet so far away.

Greenland is geographically part of the Canadian Arctic archipelago of islands, but politically is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.  We can now fly there from New York in about four hours (a substantial improvement over having to fly to Europe, and then back!).

Why do you want to go to Greenland?

For the same reason you might want to visit Alaska, Antarctica, or the Norwegian Coast… it’s naturally spectacular.  Avid photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts already have this world’s largest island on their radar.  Here’s what you can expect to do and see there:

  • Icebergs – Greenland is home to the world’s second largest ice sheet, and in the spring when it starts to calve, you can expect to see the icebergs.
  • Indigenous Culture – About 60,000 people call Greenland home, and although they are all Danish citizens, most of them are indigenous… not of European descent.  They have a unique history and culture, and they are keen to share it with you.
  • Wildlife – Do a TUNDRA SAFARI, and go looking for whales, dolphins, walrus, polar bears, Arctic fox, and many other species.
  • Fjords – The scenic cruising in Greenland rivals what you see in Norway, remote Alaska, or Antarctica.
  • It’s easier than Antarctica – it’s not nearly as far away, and there are people in Greenland.
  • Outdoor Activity – just like Alaska, you can take-in the incredible scenery from your ship, or you can get outside in a zodiac, kayak, canoe, or on foot to experience it first hand.  Fishing and whale watching is also widely available here.
  • North American History – you’re probably aware that Columbus was a bit of a fraud.  He never set foot in the United States, and the Vikings beat him to this continent by 500 years.  The Vikings’ path to the New World included Greenland and Newfoundland.

If you’ve been questioning whether an “Expedition” cruise is right for you, then visiting Greenland is a great way to check it out.  There are also more standard cruise vacations that call in at Greenland.  Many cruises to Greenland include Iceland, Newfoundland & Labrador, or the famed Northwest Passage.  There are endless possibilities for adventure in this remote land.

Recently booked a Viking Cruise?

Viking makes it really easy to book direct, either online, by phone, or on board.  Our clients worry that if they book on-line, that they’re cutting us out, but if you let us know after you’ve booked, then we can still help you with your reservation (even if you booked ON BOARD).

We’ll check over your reservation to make sure you’re getting the best possible deal, and we will also add some onboard credits that are not available on direct bookings.

We can add at least $100 per person onboard credit to any direct Viking reservation made in the last 60 days.

There is never a situation where you’ll get a better deal by booking directly with Viking (or any other cruise line).

If you recently booked a Viking Cruise, please let us know as soon as possible.

If you’re planning a trip, I’d love to help! Click here or call 800-876-0168 to get in touch today.

I look forward to hearing from you.

How WE travel on Vacation

HOW WE TRAVEL – Some of you have recently been asking about our personal vacation choices, so I thought I’d offer a look inside our thought process when we travel.

To be sure, much of our travel is driven by industry events, and touring ships and hotels.  This is the fun part of the job… but we’re collecting information, photos, and video clips for you… so our travel plans are often a bit different than when YOU go on vacation.  Here are some of our other guidelines:

  • We go for as long as possible – air travel is just not a good time anymore, so when incurring the time, expense, frustration, aggravation, and time zone changes of air travel, we want to make it worthwhile
  • We walk… a lot.  We’re in Europe two or three times per year.  Every time, our plane lands late-morning or early-afternoon. The kiss of death for us in adjusting to the new time zone, is to check into the hotel, and take a nap.  We drop our luggage, and head back out to experience our destination on foot.  It keeps us awake until the early evening local time.
  • We take a FOODIE Tour of our destination.  Guided walking tours of a new destination can be fine, but a FOODIE tour offers the same history and orientation, and they feed you!  I’ve also come to appreciate the very real connection between people, their culture, and their food.
  • We seek out LOCAL entertainment.  This might mean a Flamenco demonstration in Spain.  The whirling Dervish in Turkey.  Moulin Rouge in Paris.  Or maybe it’s just seeking out a small neighborhood pub that isn’t on the main tourist thoroughfares.  One of our most memorable nights was stumbling into a stand-up comedy show… IN SPANISH.  We didn’t get most of it, but it was still really entertaining to be laughing with all the locals.
  • We go off-season.  This is partly a function of being in the travel trade, but it’s also our preferred time to go.  We’ll trade off weather for crowds any time.
  • We DON’T rent cars… or at least try to avoid it.  It was pointed out to me by a French tour guide several years ago, that landing in a country, renting a car, and then driving yourself around is a distinctly American way of thinking about travel.  Pragmatically, I’m less excited now about driving in foreign countries than I was when I was younger, and often if you hire a car AND driver, it doesn’t cost that much more than renting a car, and paying to park it.
  • We choose hotels based primarily on LOCATION.  We try to stay in Virtuoso preferred hotels wherever we can because we’re guaranteed a measure of quality, and it’s where our clients want to stay.  However, if there isn’t a Virtuoso property around, or there’s a hotel that’s more in the middle of where we want to stay, we’ll go there.  This is usually in the city (or village) center, NOT some undoubtedly magnificent self-contained resort way out of town.
  • We’ll pay extra to skip the line.  Sometimes you can pay an additional fee to visit an attraction either before or after hours, or some other form of privileged access.  Sometimes it seems crazy to pay an extra $100 to get up at 6AM for a visit to Doge’s Palace, or the Sistine Chapel.  However you might not ever get back, and if you can avoid sharing it with (literally) thousands of others, it seems like money well spent.
  • We rent bicycles or E-bikes.  In Amsterdam, this is how the locals get around.  Some cities are small, but somewhat spread out, making bikes a great mode of transport.  You’re going faster than you would on a walking tour, so you’re seeing more.  You’re also going much slower than you would be in a car or motor coach, so you notice more.

Adventures in Remote Destinations with HX

REMOTE ADVENTURES – You may not immediately recognize HX – they are a NEW brand, for a very OLD company.  You may have heard of Hurtigruten – the Norwegian company that has been taking guests to the ends of the earth since the 19th century.  It seems that not only do English-speakers have trouble saying “Hurtigruten”, but have trouble remembering it too… so now it’s HX.

HX runs accessible adventure cruises in Antarctica, the Galapagos, Greenland, the Canadian Northwest Passage, Alaska, and of course, Norway.  I’m purposely avoiding the word “expedition” because it conjures up images of Olympic-level athletes scaling Mount Everest.  We’ve done several expedition cruises, and the clientele is about as far from the Olympic Athlete’s set as you can imagine.

On our adventure to the Galapagos last year, the age range was 20 to 82, with the average age being around 65.  You need to be able to get into a zodiac boat (with crew assistance), and be able to walk on uneven terrain, but other than that, there’s no special physical requirements. Probably the most important prerequisite is that you’re curious about the area you want to explore.

HX also operates the world’s first two hybrid-electric cruise ships.  Roald Amundsen and Fridjof Nansen both carry under 500 guests, and when not operating on bio-diesel, they run on electric power when they are in areas that may have wildlife sensitive to the noise of conventional engines.  Bob and I were on the North American inaugural cruise a few years ago for Roald Amundsen, and did this ship tour video:  https://youtu.be/1L_ByDqhGR0

The first destination I would have on your radar for this type of travel is Greenland.  There’s now direct flights from New York to Greenland, so you can be there in four-hours… quite a bit closer than getting to Antarctica.

The other destination you might want to take an HX Accessible Adventure Cruise for a test-drive is in Alaska.  If you’ve done Alaska on a mega-ship, you haven’t fully experienced its remoteness and majesty.  You won’t find T-shirt and jewelry shops owned by the cruise lines at your Alaskan ports of call when you go with HX.

After you’ve decided that small ship remote adventures (advertised as “Expedition Cruises”) are something of interest for you, you can also do this type of cruise to Antarctica, Western Australia, the Galapagos Islands, the northern most points in Norway, and the Great Lakes.

So if you’re curious about the natural world, love scenery, OR you really like the idea of visiting more remote corners of the planet, but want to do so in comfort, then HX should be on your radar.

If you’d like to see Kim & Bob discussing HX Expeditions, check out this week’s video blog: https://youtu.be/IVpzycK0hyQ

Luggage: A Refrigerator Sized Problem

If you’re a traveller, the greatest innovation of the past century hasn’t been space travel or insulin, but rather wheels on luggage.  This has changed everything.

No longer are you restricted by your own ability to lift and manage your own bags. You can now bring just about everything you own, and simply be able to push it along a sidewalk until someone much stronger than you can lift it onto a conveyor belt.

This explains why new luggage comes in the same sized box as a refrigerator.  It’s a comedy of errors watching some people attempt to manage their own stuff.

For some, this catastrophe-in-waiting is remedied by packing light. This has always been my preference.  I also had to rethink my luggage strategy when I combined a backpacking trip in Europe with a cruise.

There are a number of services out there that will pick up your luggage a few days in advance of your travels, and deliver it to your embarkation point or hotel. Imagine how nice it is to get up on your date of travel, grab your carry-on, and leave for the airport.  No overhead cranes to get your luggage in and out of your trunk; no wheeling through the airport with your half-ton of stuff – it takes away a lot of the pain of travelling.

So if you’re a notoriously heavy packer, or even if you just don’t want to be bothered dragging stuff through airports, it’s probably worth checking one of these services out. For a few dollars more, you solve a refrigerator-sized problem.

Now… think about how much more stuff you can bring!

When I’m away for more than one week, I simply plan on doing laundry, which takes a lot of pressure off.  Below is Bob’s packing list.  There’s no doubt it is easier for men, however women have the option to accessorize and mix and match to create different outfits.

  • GREAT shoes (waterproof shoes or boots depending on the destination and season).
  • 7 changes of undergarments.
  • Two pairs of pants for daytime activities.  Two more dress pants for night.
  • 2 shorts or bathing suits, depending on the trip.
  • 4 shirts
  • A raincoat, and maybe rain pants.

If jackets or heavier clothes are necessary, they can be worn on the plane, so you can pack lighter.

VIDEO BLOG:  Kim and Bob have been discussing my weekly blog post on YouTube, so if you want to see their conversation about WHAT TO PACK for vacation, here’s the link:

Our Advice about Travel Insurance

We offer just one piece of advice when it comes to travel insurance: You definitely need it.

We normally provide our clients with two different insurance quotes: one from the cruise line or tour operator, and another from a third-party insurance company.  We then highly recommend consulting a licensed insurance agent for guidance on this important aspect of travel.  Insurance pros have access to a much wider variety of insurance plans and can give you knowledgeable advice about which one would be best for your unique situation.

There are two reasons we don’t give detailed insurance advice:

  1. Our passion and expertise is travel, not insurance.
  2. As travel advisors we are required to offer travel protection, but we are not allowed to interpret the coverage.

Here is a bit of guidance to help you when you are speaking with an insurance pro:

Three Aspects of Travel Insurance

Most travel insurance policies bundle these three aspects together, but if you only wanted one of them, a good insurance broker can help you with that:

  1. Trip Cancellation.  This covers you if you are unable to make the trip (for specific reasons).  Without this coverage you are risking whatever you paid for the trip.
  2. Trip Interruption.  This is for annoying things like flight delays or when your luggage goes missing.  You are not mitigating much risk with this type of insurance, but it does make your life way easier when things go wrong.
  3. Travel Medical.  This is the critical one, and you are taking a significant risk if you leave home without this.  It can cost you tens of thousands of dollars if you are caught without this type of insurance.

Here is some of the rationalization we sometimes hear from clients about insurance, and why they may want to talk to an insurance professional about the flaws in their logic:

“Health Care is Free in Europe/Canada/Australia/NZ”.  It is true that in all other developed nations, health care is available to residents without a direct charge.  This is NOT extended to visitors, who will pay (a lot) for medical attention.

“I’m insured on my credit card”.  Check the fine print – you may or may not be covered, and there may be significant limitations to that coverage.  Unfortunately, this probably means reading through a few hundred pages of legal double-speak, but if you’re relying on such coverage, make sure you know what’s in there (and what is not).

“I’ll just fly home if I have a problem”.  This is truly asinine, and a really poor risk mitigation strategy.  You are betting everything you own that if you become sick or injured, you’ll be able to fly across the world on a commercial jet.

The pandemic has added to the complexity of travel insurance, underscoring the need to chat it through with an insurance pro.
