Some of you ask about me and Bob, as well as the rest of our team, so this week I thought I’d offer a fun look at the team members you interface the most with.  Hopefully this makes us a little bit less anonymous when we’re communicating with you by phone or email.  

We tried to make this fun… so here goes:

Kim

• Favorite Travel Destination:  There are so many…!  So I have decided on where I would like to go back to and stay for an extended period of time:  Florence, Italy.  A romantic city, capital of the Tuscany Region known for its food, WINE and culture.
• Favorite Cruise Destination:  Mekong River – Vietnam and Cambodia.
• Best place for a City Stay:  Edinburgh, Scotland.  Medieval and historic, new meets old, great pubs, vibrant nightlife, more trees than people and of course the stunning Edinburgh Castle.
• Best travel experience:  Taking 120 of my favorite clients to dinner at Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin. This church is almost 1000 years old and absolutely stunning. We started the evening off in the crypt where we were served appetizers and bubbly. Followed by an incredible dinner while listening to the church choir sing tunes from the 60, 70 and 80’s.
• Favorite Food:  Oysters- I once won an eating/shucking contest.  I ate, the Chef shucked. I won’t tell you how many I ate – just know it was a lot!
• Favorite Movie:  The NoteBook.
• If I were a FRIENDS character:  Monica – she was a Chef, which I aspire to be and a little OCD which I tend to be sometimes.
• Best TV show of all time:  Seinfeld… but if I am being totally honest The Bachelor or Bachelorette 🙂
• Vacation disaster story:  The two that never happened because of COVID – Malta and Marrakech.  
• Best Travel Tip:  Good walking shoes especially in Europe. My favorite brands are: For casual:  FitFlops (good and sturdy and very comfortable).  For running shoes – a new favorite find, Dr. Scholls White fashion sneakers. For Strappy Sandals – Teva. 

Peri

• Favorite Travel Destination: My bed. Is this allowed? LOL.  California, the weather is always gorgeous!
• Best place for a City Stay:  New York City! All the good stuff is usually within walking distance and the food is so unbelievably good.
• Travel Challenge:  Took a road trip to Banff, Alberta and our car ended up breaking down on the way in a remote area. It was eventually fixed and we were able to return safely!
• Favorite drink at Starbucks:  Caramel Ribbon Crunch!
• Favorite Movie:  Big Hero 6! I am a sucker for animated movies.
• Best TV show of all time:  Lucifer!
• Vacation disaster story:  I recently traveled to Miami and lost my rental car keys in the Ocean!  Not sure how that happened but a very expensive lesson learned.
• Best Travel Tip:  Travel light if possible, there may be lots of stuff you want to bring home!  Also makes getting through the Airport easier.
• Favourite foreign food:  Chimichangas! I could eat these for the rest of my life!
• Something about you that might surprise others:  I am a huge video game enthusiast. 
• What you’re reading right now:  1984 by George Orwell.
• A guilty pleasure:  Watching old cartoons from when I grew up, like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Looney Tunes, or Tom & Jerry!
• Top destination on your travel list:  Japan!!  I absolutely love the culture and can’t wait to see some of those beautiful Cherry Blossom trees!

Bob

• Favorite Destination:  Zanzibar – a crossroads of culture for Asians, Africans and Europeans. 
• Best Cruise Destination: Croatia – as spectacular as Greece & Turkey, with fewer ships and crowds. 
• Best City Stay:  San Miguel de Allende – this small city in Mexico is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a great place to wander around for a few days. 
• Travel Story:  I met the Prime Minister of Poland (and had a brief chat) in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo several years ago.
• Favorite Movie:  Dead Poets’ Society.  Robin Williams was a genius.
• If I were a FRIENDS character:  People would see me as Chandler (because I’m a smart-ass), but I’m actually more Ross (because I’m a geek).
• Best TV show:  MASH.  Maybe Seinfeld.
• Travel Disaster Story:  I slept on a dock in Western Australia.  Got there too late to find a hotel room.  I was young and stupid, so it was all part of the adventure.

Sue

• Favorite drink at Starbucks:  190 degree skinny vanilla latte with an extra shot.  I like my coffee strong and really hot, and 190 degrees is as hot as they will make it.  
• Best Travel Tip: – Always try out the Metro.  It’s a great way to orient yourself to a new city and often requires you to figure out the currency at the same time.  I like doing this because it gives me a feel for what it’s like to be a local in the destination.
• Something about you that might surprise others: I’m 79 years old.  (Just kidding, I’m not 79.  But I like to tell people that, so they think I look young for my age).
• Best Party Trick:  This isn’t really a party trick, but if you smear your blood on a slide and give me a microscope, I can tell if you have malaria or if you’re iron deficient, and I can also accurately estimate the number of platelets you have.  I used to be a Hematology Medical Laboratory Technologist.
• A guilty pleasure:  Naps!  Not that I get to indulge very often. 
• Top two destinations on my travel bucket list: Rwanda (to visit the Mountain Gorillas). Northwest Passage on a small expedition ship (because I want to get there before it’s overrun with tourists).
• My claim to fame:  I survived having a 3-year-old toddler son, and a 15-year-old teenage daughter… at the SAME time.  That was many years ago, and I’m almost over it.

If you regularly receive these notes, you probably wouldn’t consider yourself a non-cruiser, but many of you are river cruisers, and have expressed some disdain for ocean cruising because you went on a mega-ship 30 years ago, and didn’t really like it much.

I hear ya.  

Last week I talked about why some might want to consider a river cruise (here it is if you missed it: https://pamperedcruiser.com/why-a-river-cruise/ ), so this week I’ll suggest why you might want to (re) look at ocean cruising if you’re a dedicated river cruiser.

First of all, the mega-ships have their place in the market: they are great, cheap getaways, and if you’re travelling with children or teens, those floating amusement parks may be exactly the right choice.  However, there are many aspects of those mega-ship experiences that put people off. 

So why should you reconsider this view?

Much like hotels, there are a wide variety of cruise products out there, and because you didn’t like one, doesn’t mean another might not be perfect for you.  As a general rule, the smaller the ship, the higher end it will be, so let’s chat about why you might want to consider a small-ship ocean cruise:

• Go Places Not Otherwise Accessible – Coastal Alaska, Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, the Kimberly Coast (Australia), Greenland, the Norwegian Coast, West Africa, and so many other places are MUCH easier to access by ship.
• Good Air Service – Many of the small-ship cruise lines start and finish their itineraries in cities with good air connections from the United States.  In between, there might be a bunch of ports you’ve never heard of.  This is a great way to visit smaller, less touristy, or remote areas and minimize your air connections.  
• Diversity of Activities – If your travel companion or group has different ideas as to what they want to do on vacation, then cruises offer a wide diversity of activities. There’s something for everyone and you don’t all have to do the same thing.
• Food – The small-ship cruise lines offer a high quality culinary experience that is about as far away from those ridiculous all-you-can-eat buffets on the mega-ships as imaginable.  Many cruise lines have arrangements with Michelin rated chefs that would cost hundreds of dollars on shore, but these experiences are included in your cruise fare.
• Entertainment – The cruise lines source their entertainers in New York and London, and the competition is very high to get on board.  If you like live music, and other performing arts, it is included in your fare on small-ship cruises.  This is one advantage to ocean cruising over river cruising (where the entertainment options are usually limited). 
• Cost-Effectiveness – A small-ship cruise out of London will cost between $350 and $650 per person, per night.  The cost of a 5-star hotel in London, with meals at Michelin-rated restaurants, West End shows, and incidentals will cost you a lot more.
• Unpack Once – You can explore many different places while only having to unpack once.  This is even more valuable in those lesser known, out of the way places. 
• Sample New Places – A cruise is the perfect way to try a bunch of Greek Islands (for example), so you can figure out which one you want to go back to for a longer stay.
• Inclusions – Most small ship cruise lines include everything (or almost everything), so you’re not constantly pulling out your wallet.
• Efficiency:  Cruise Ships most often move at night – a distinct advantage over having to travel between places by motor coach in the daytime.

Most of you are cruisers, but I’ve been getting a surprising number of inquiries lately from those that have either NEVER taken a cruise, or they sailed one of the floating amusement parks out of Florida in the 80s and hated it.  The two main questions:

Why should I consider a River Cruise?

How is River different than Ocean?

First of all, I would never try to talk someone into something, but there are reasons why cruise is the fastest growing segment of the leisure travel industry for several years running (and no signs of slowing down).  

Here are some points I put forward to answer the two questions above:

• Cost-Effectiveness:  River cruises in Paris (for example), cost between $350 and $600 per night.  There’s no chance of staying in a 5-star Paris hotel, eating three meals a day, enjoying entertainment daily, and visiting the sites for this amount.
• Efficiency:  River Boats and Cruise Ships often move at night – a distinct advantage over having to travel between places by motor coach in the daytime.
• Unpack Once:  If you want to see a bunch of different cities and villages in Europe, think of a River Boat as a 5-star hotel that moves with you on your journey.  Yes… There are motor coach tours that do very similar routings if you’re willing to be in a different hotel every night. 
• Destination Immersion:  Unlike Ocean Ships (especially those floating amusement parks), a River Boat is NOT your destination.  It is a vessel that enables your exploration of the region you’re sailing through.  A river cruise experience is made up of what you do on shore, and those aspects of shore that are brought back on board for you (like local food and entertainment).
• Minimal Motion:  On a River Boat, you often must look out a window to figure out if you’re moving.  Even the most stable Ocean ship will be pitching and rolling in high seas.  
• Fewer People:  River Boats hold between 60 and 180 people – something you notice most when embarking and disembarking.
• River cruises are busy:  There are no sea-days on a river cruise, and you spend most of your time on shore.  Activities on board the River Boat are more limited than the ocean because of this.  
• Inclusions:  All River Cruises we deal with include daily excursions, beer & wine with meals, wifi on the ship, and a very high quality culinary offering.  Some include an open bar and gratuities.  Regardless, you won’t find your room charges exceeding your fare, like you do on some of the mega-ships.

Things to consider when choosing a Land Cruise:

There are even more Land Cruise providers than there are cruise lines, so here are some of the questions you’ll need to consider when choosing a land-tour provider:

• HOTELS:  The quality of places you prefer to stay (3-star, 4-star, or 5-star).  Tauck uses 5-star hotels wherever possible. 
• PACE:  Are you in each place for 1 night, 2 nights or longer?  This will make a big difference in how you experience the destination.  You also need to decide how much packing and unpacking you wish to do (one distinct advantage to cruising).
• INCLUSIONS:  Are meals and drinks included?  How about excursions (those optional activities just like on a cruise).  Tauck includes just about all meals (depending on the itinerary), but in some places you are better off doing your own thing.
• SIZE OF GROUP:  this ranges between 8 and 52 people.

There is no doubt that cruising is an “efficient” and cost-effective way to travel if you want to do more than be stationed in one place for your vacation.  However, not every destination can be explored by ship (or even river boat), so the idea of a Land Cruise makes a lot of sense for some locations.  

The National Parks in both the United States and Canada, for example, are spectacular, and draw people from all over the world.  With very few exceptions, these natural wonders can’t be accessed by ship, so a Land Cruise is how you want to experience them.

“Happy New Year!”.  It’s a common salutation at this time of year, but I prefer to think of it as a directive.  How can I make sure this is a happy year for me, and those in my orbit?

Bob and I both feel extraordinarily fortunate because we work every day in a job we love.  The travel perks are great, but the day to day “grind” is helping people with their vacation plans.  This is not without occasional frustration, but it is easy to be happy when interfacing with people in this way. 

Bob and I, both individually and as a couple have always been travellers.  Neither of us particularly enjoy sitting on a beach and drinking Margaritas (although we’ve known to enjoy that on occasion!), so I was trying to figure out why I love travel (even before being part of the industry).

I think it’s about learning and discovery.  It’s about seeing how people in different countries live their day to day lives, and realizing how much we have in common with them, and simultaneously seeing what they do differently.  When you live in the United States, it’s very easy for us to remain oblivious or disinterested in how other people live.  I’ve decided to work harder at paying attention.

You might not ever have heard of the Cantril Ladder – it’s an attempt to empirically measure “Happiness” around the world using a standard criteria.  We’re ranked 15^th in the United States (the top 14 are Northern/Western European nations, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada).  It’s my goal to help us rank higher on this list – primarily through the tremendous privilege of travel.

My theme for 2024:  LESS SCREEN TIME… MORE TRAVEL TIME.  The first part is to minimize a force that is proven to make people UNHAPPY.  The second is to increase what makes people HAPPY.
